    Bingo To Benefit
    Medical Charity
"Fight SMA SW— Desiree's Buddies" will host its second annual benefit bingo night April 9 at the Lions Club in Moriarty.
The fund-raiser will benefit the organization, which advocates for victims of spinal muscular atrophy, a form of muscular dystrophy.
Erin Weisner, president of Fight SMA SW— Desiree's Buddies and mother of Desiree Vallo, a 3-year-old with the disease, said SMA is the No. 1 inherited cause of infant deaths.
In its most severe form, SMA kills the babies that it infects, and most don't reach their second birthday, she said. SMA affects an estimated 28,000 North Americans and the deadly gene for SMA is unknowingly carried by 7.5 million potential parents. One in 40 people carries the gene responsible for SMA, Weisner said.
Victims' minds remain unaffected, but they are trapped in dying bodies, she said.
The organization is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity and all donations are 100 percent tax deductible, Weisner said. It was created to promote education, research and development of medical strategies and techniques to treat, cure and eliminate the disease to improve the lives of all people affected.
The bingo night will feature fun, excitement and prizes. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. The event starts at 7 p.m. at the new Lions Club building on North Broadway in Moriarty.
For more information, call Linda Riley at 281-8701 or Weisner at 897-2SMA.
